Help, advice please

Hi everyone, I just got some bad news today. The ER fellowship that I got hired for just got canceled. I was supposed to start in Jan. I am really mad due to the fact that I have spent time and money to prepare for this new position.

I was thinking about talking to someone in upper management to see if I could still go to the ER. The manager that gave me the news was very apolegetic and he said that he is leaving his position also.

Does any one think I should try to get them to honor this job offer?

I was told that upper management thinks we have too many inexperienced nurses in the ER. I have no ER experience, just med-surg.

Any advoce would be appreciated.

Rather than try to get them to come through with this job offer, see what else they have to offer. I know what it's like to be the only experienced RN in a level one trauma center and fun, it ain't. Too many inexperienced RN's doesn't make for longevity for nurses or patients.

What about trying ICU then in 6 months to a year, transfer to the ER?

I am just upset because it took me a long time to come to the choice of ER and now that I have, it is hard to give it up. I was hired two months ago and asked to wait until this fellowship started. In the meantime I have taken an ECG course, bought numerous books on emergency nursing, and attended a trauma course,all on my own money.

I also have downloaded a lot of info from this site to update my knowledge of meds used in the ER. I always try to be prepared and educated. On top of all this I have told my co-workers, friends and family about my new position.

I suppose that I could try the ICU, but I have never been interested in critical care. It seems wrong to take a job that I really don't want.

What do you think?

Are their any other hospitals in your area, if so, try them. Med surg experience is good and they might consider you. Just a thought.

Just a thought but....A. the hospital is going back on their work:angryfire ....B. The ER Manager is leaving.....:confused: Maybe it might be wise to keep your options open and look elsewhere, Most places would be thrilled to have a nurse with both med/surg experience and the inititive to do all the other things you have done. Somebody will have their:welcome: sign out for you.

Are there any other ER's in your area? Do they all require ER experience? I am very sorry this has happened. If this hospital is cutting costs, maybe another facility might be a better fit because you would get a more thorough orientation.

Now that a few days have passed I have been able to gain some perspective. Our ER may be a mess right now and this could be a blessing in disguise. We have an interim director and the nurse manager just gave notice. When you add the fact that upper management has decided that we have too many nurses in the ER with little to no ER experience, maybe now is not the right time to go there.

PLAN B

I am working on my BSN, therefore I am sorta obligated to this hospital. They are paying half of my tuition. So in January I could double up on my classes now that I won't have the pressure of learning a new job. One thing I don't want to do is critical care. The learning experience would probably be beneficial but it is not a job I am interested in. I could stay on my floor, I have not burned any bridges, they are happy to keep me.

I could give the ER another try later. There are lots of hospitals in my area so if something doesn't pan out here...eventually I will move on.
