Hello I'm new here

I had a question I am an RN student and when I finish I want to work in mother/baby or L&D and want to know what I need to do to be able to do that right out of school or can I right out of school. Thank You

Hi and welcome! I will try and answer your question to the best of my knowledge...while you are still a student you should decide which hospital you would like to work at and apply for an externship. If they don't have externships on the L&D floor then inquire about internships...those programs are pretty much the same thing -- the only difference is that you are either a student (extern) or GN (intern). You work under the supervision of a preceptor and learn a lot until able to function on your own. I think these two ways are the best to get into L&D right after you graduate. Some hospitals only offer internships about once or twice a year so I would start working on it soon if you are a student in your last year. Good luck to you!

Look for a hospital that offers L/D residencies for new grads. That is your very best bet.

Good luck and welcome to allnurses.com.

Just go and talk to the nurse recruiter where you want to work. I graduated in May this year and myself and four other new grads were hired by the same maternity center, three of us in postpartum and the other two in L&D,. Also, it helps if your maternity nursing instructor can give you a good reference!
