Hello All

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a first time threader. I live in WV and have been a nurse for over 20 years. Last Oct 23, 2005, I "forgot" to call our ER physician to get an Extubation order for my patient. He was a DNR that was intubated against his LW. His wife who was MPOA asked that he be removed. I obliged but forgot to call and get a MD order. I was fired and told I exceeded my scope of practice as a RN and was considered a "safety hazzard" to my patients. I am a APRN-BC from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh but have been unable to find a job because the VA where I used to work has been since Jan 2006 deciding to report or not. It is now almost April and still it is in the VA system "red tape". I finally reported myself and am waiting to hear from the SLB. I have not been able to find where nurses have had decisions made on their license's due to this type of infraction. If anyone out there would know I would appreciate some type of feedback.

sincerely, unemployeed

Welcome to these forums and good luck to you. I wish you the best and hope that the best possible outcome arises from your unfortunate situation.

I get nervous when I see messages like this. Yes, I know nurses are not supposed to make mistakes, but I can see it happening. We are human, and even though not intentional anything can happen. I am terrified to go to school and then be on the streets if I made one mistake.
