Has anyone else experienced this......

I took the placement test for my local community college, which is called the Accuplacer, and scored very low on the math section. Therefore, I would have had to take and pass three remedial math classes before being permitted to register for college algebra.

Instead, I took the expensive shortcut of enrolling in a private nursing program that does not have any math requirements. I will be graduating during the early part of next year, and will be eligible to sit for my RN boards. I should mention that I'm already an LVN.

After I receive my RN license, I will slowly and steadily conquer my weak math skills by enrolling in the remedial classes.

I also have this to say to to the naysayers. . . many of you are going to say that the algebra is extremely important and blah, blah, blah. I admit that college level algebra is important in developing a person's abstract thinking skills and the ability to solve problems when the answer is not so obvious.

However, I have been able to complete the med-math and dosage calculations tests at my school with 100 percent scores, despite my lack of algebraic skills. The math skills that nurses use are probably at the 8th grade level, at the most. In addition, I have been working as an LVN for the past few years, and have been doing the med-math at my job, which is primarily doing medication passes.

I took 4 years of algebra in high school, but I never learned how to do it properly.
