GYN prep

Published

I'm puzzled about the correct procedure on how to prep a GYN case.Do I start off by cleaning the perineal area with soap solution and then use a sponge stick with betadine paint and insert in lady partsl vault first?Help!!!:sniff::banghead::no:

You are going to get various answers, because this is one of those gray areas.

Some people think you should do "clean to dirty." That is, prep the abdomen first, then prep the lady partsl area.

Some people think you should prep the lady partsl area first and use another kit(obviously) to prep the belly..the rationale being that if you've prepped the belly and you are now prepping the lady parts, there could be "splashing" from that area, and it could contaminate the abdominal prep.

I was trained to do it the second way, when I still did GYN.

Sorry, I didn't read your post completely, I got distracted. The answer I gave would be in the instance of a gyn laparoscopy or lap assisted vag hyst..

I have seen doctors do what you said in your original post(the gyn docs did their own preps where I used to work most of the time).

Well for me if It's a typical lady partsl prep say for a Hysteroscope I do it this way. We use just betadine prep sticks. With the first stick I prep the thighs then suprapubic area than lady partsl vault followed down to the buttocks. With the second stick I usually do a final thorough lady partsl prep, leave the stick the lady parts to straight cath and than done.

For Laparascope/hysteroscope cases. We prep lower first with paint sticks (see above) than change gloves and do an alcohol wipe followed by Duraprep. The idea here being not to splash betadine from the lady partsl prep onto the abdomen (As was stated above).
