Gre vs CCRN

Published

Hey guys,

I was wondering what would be more important to study for. I took the GRE last month and bombed it. I got a 5 in the analytical writing portion, but did below 1000 in the GRE. It was strange because even without studying, I scored above 1000 the first time! When it really counted, I faltered big time!

I have been studying for my CCRN and was wondering what should take priority retaking the GRE or taking the CCRN for the first time?

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

I guess it depends on why you need the GRE? The CCRN test wont get you into grad school, but the GRE won't help you at work either....

Well, what are your goals? If you're trying to get into grad school definitely focus on the GRE, or find a school that doesn't require it. If you plan on putting off grad school for a while, shelve those GRE books and start studying for your CCRN.

in my opinion, the ccrn is more important, cause it will come in handy with the medical questions there going to ask on the interview, i flanked the gre my total score was under 800 but i just got accepted in a crna prog, i think its because i aced the interview questions

The GRE will open doors for you in grad school that the CCRN will not. That being said you already took the GRE and the score you got may be the best you can get. So waisting time to retake a test with no appreciable change in score would not help you much. If you get your CCRN it will add another dimention to your application. If I were you I would get my CCRN and then take a review(Kaplan) course to retake the GRE. If time will not permit this then get the CCRN and apply.

My undergrad GPA was terrible (e.g. below 3.0). I applied in 2006 to a few places (FNP and CRNA programs) and got rejected from all of them.

I took the GRE (1350 score), got my CCRN, and took 12 credits of graduate physiology (4.0 GPA) and got accepted into everything I applied for this year.

Definitely get your CCRN, it can do nothing but help and add to your resume. besides, its really not to hard especially compared to the GRE's :uhoh21:

also, most places give you an incentive or increase in pay for obtaining your ccrn.

Thanks guys/gals for all of your advice. The GRE was for a CRNA program. I retook the GRE, did much, much better, then took the CCRN a couple of days later-(yes, I'm crazy) and passed! Got into CRNA school this year! YAY!

Thanks for all of your replies and advice!

That was a quick turn around on the GRE retake, what did you do different to prepare? Where did you get into school?
