received my letter of rejection from the nursing program at my university some weeks ago, spent one or two days in dark gloom and then convinced myself that all will be well. i have decided to not give up because i really want to do nursing, so i'm going to reapply for fall '09.
but now i have a whole year and i need to remain a full time student so i went to my adviser and she suggested i do a minor in psychology since i have already taken 6 credits of psych...the minor requires 18 credit hours so maybe i should take psych courses for the whole year until i reapply again. what i wish to ask, if i may, is, for those who got rejected, what did you do while you wait...for example, did you try to get another degree or took more classes that might aid you with your future nursing job?
i'm not sure if having a psychology minor will benefit me with my nursing career, but i really love psychology and i think it might complement nicely with nursing and i think i should give it a go. the other option is to take health science courses to get a better understanding of stuff and for more knowledge. any advice would be greatly appreciated! thanks...wait, also congratulations to those who have received their acceptance letters--i'm happy for you all. hope you all have a great day

I'm so sorry about that. I know exactly how you feel. I didn't get in my first try, but was successful on my second. During the one semester I had in between, I took some psych and also microbiology. Micro was my last corequisite and I figured I might as well get it over with!
Psych will most likely not help you with nsg, but it's a very interesting subject and....if I do say so myself....not a very difficult subject! Good opportunity to raise your GPA.
Keep your head up and get ready to apply again. It will be here before you know it.

Psych sounds like a good idea to me if you really like it and are capable of getting very good grades in it. The college of nursing will likely look at what you did since you last applied so I would try and work in a hospital too or at least volunteer and add that to your app for next year. Your grades in the next few semesters will be key.
Also I might retake some of the prerequisite classes you may have not done so hot in. That way you should have a better shot at admissions for fall 2009 (unless you already had a 4.0 there is always room for improvement)
I'm so sorry you didn't get in for this year, but you have a GREAT attitude and determination so I know you will succeed! I'm thinking positive thoughts for you.:loveya:

When I got rejected I had taken all of my pre reqs and support courses so I was in the same bind. I am on financial aid so they get upset if you start taking courses that aren't on your degree plan, but at the same time if I didn't take at least 6 credit hours my loans would go into repayment. My financial aid advisor told me to just pick two classes that I thought my help me which I did (Nutrition, and a pysch class). I had to write a letter this semester explaining myself to financial aid and why I took classes I didn't need.
So my advice is if you get financial aid make sure you run it by them before you make you decision.

GreenGlassCastle,
I applaud your determination to not give up. If nursing is what you want then don't let one rejection stop you. I think getting any degree whether it be a major or minor can only be a good thing. I think a minor in psychology is a great idea. Nurses, have to treat the whole patient that includes mind and body, and there is also a very quickly growing need for psychiatric nurses. I don't know if that area interests you at all, but whatever you learn will only help you in any nursing job. I wish you the best of luck in getting into nursing.
Regards,
Jean

My suggestion is this... if you want to do psych then go for it...
but...
have you thought of the main reason for taking additional classes? I mean the fact that you were rejected? Most admissions committees, when evaluating an applicant that has been denied in the past look to see what you have done to strengthen your application since the last time. I say this because I work closely with my schools admissions office and we give this advice out daily.
I know you need to be full time, so getting a job and taking on more hours in a health care setting isn't the best route (but I would suggest you at least volunteer)
Maybe take a certified nursing assistant class, or retake classes you made lower grades in to boost your gpa and your chances at getting in a second time. Now I know many people don't think you should waste your time retaking classes, but I believe retaking A&P 1 & 2 really helped me. I made Bs in them my first go around... the second time I made As easily... but I also got an added benefit... I REALLY mastered the material and it has made my life in nursing school all that much easier....
These are just a few suggestions, but I would make sure whatever you choose to do strengthens your application first and foremost... and if you do decide to get a minor, be sure to say in your application essay why you did it.... you don't want the admissions people questioning whether or not you really want to do nursing or not.
Good luck and best wishes!!!

I must disagree with this statement. I think psychology will directly help you in your nursing career. Having a better knowledge of how the mind works will help you with your patients. Taking psychology classes will only make you a better nurse. Nursing is not just about the physical care of the patient, it is mental as well. If you understand how your patient feels emotionally, you can care for them better. Many people are scared to be in hospitals and other settings. Psychology can help you learn how to best deal with these situations.
Go for the psychology. It will help make you be the best nurse you can be.

Notice I said "most likely".....I didn't say it was a bad idea. I happen to like Psych and am 1 course short of a Psych minor right now.
It won't hurt to take the classes, but I don't think it gives a significant edge in the nursing world. That's my opinion and I am sticking to it!

I didn't say that you said it was a bad idea. I wasn't trying to attack your opinion. I was just disagreeing and offering my point of view. I apologize if you felt that I was attacking you.

Is this a BSN or ADN program? just wondering because if it is ADN then find out what classes you'll need later as BSN pre-req's or even MSN and get those out of the way now while you still have a shot at financial aid to cover them, good luck!
Thank you all very much for your very helpful responses, I appreciate it much. :)
I am actually doing a BSN and will definitely retake Anatomy and Physiology again since this was the course that I didn't do great in. Not only will I need it to raise the GPA, but also to have a more firm grasp on the material as Jessiemiz said. I'm going to study my old notes and re-read the textbook (lucky I didn't throw them out and re-sell the book) and try to make it a little less difficult. Hopefully the second time around will be easier.
Thanks again and have a great weekend.
