Goofy question

Specializes in Certified Wound Care Nurse.

Hi all,

I am still in my first year of nursing and am interested in traveling. I have heard that at a minimum one year's worth of experience is necessary, while other travelers say 3 to 5 is better. Is there a point at which one knows when one is ready? Or is it like having children - one never is *really* ready?

I've read the sticky notes and other posts, but would like to hear about others' experiences if possible.

Many thanks,

Shawna

It depends on your comfort level, skills level, and communication. I think the best way to get an idea of traveling is floating to other units within your specialty at your facility. Ofcourse other hospitals have computer or paper charting, and other differences. but it's really all the same.

When you could get through all the toughest shifts from floating and go home without worrying if something was done then I think you're ready.

After 1 year, I wasn't quite ready. I was comfortable in my unit, but still new. After 2 years...this is just for me...I was ready. I was completely sure of myself & my skills. I think it's safer to wait 2 years.
