Good book recommendations?

of course, you will definitely want to bone up on critical care procedures, reading telemetry and that kind of stuff. there are some really good websites that have a lot of this stuff on them if you don't have the money to buy the books.

you should also check out the "stickys" on the various critical care and er forums of allnurses for some informational links and advice as well.

when i started working as a coder for a huge group of er physicians i was having difficulty understanding some of the procedures they were dictating in their patient encounters so i could code them properly. i'm talking about stuff like the difference between simple and complicated wound closures, getting beans out of kids noses and ears, drilling holes into fingernails to remove hematomas, and how rings are removed from edematous fingers. there are a couple of books that you can look at/purchase on the barnes & noble or amazon website that describe common er procedures that the docs do so you will know what kind of supplies or equipment they'll need. i purchased one of the books (it's in my storage locker at the moment and i can't recall the title), but i don't think it was that expensive and only about a 1/2 inch thick.
