I am 38 (will be 39 next month) and I am going back to school. I graduated from Medical Assisting in 1996. Is there any advice that can be given to someone like me, who has been out of school for so long?

I'm 42 and have been working on my prereqs for 2 years. I'll start my RN program in January. HAVE FUN! I have loved learning, I've loved being around younger people, and I've loved excelling academically. If you don't enjoy it, it will be very tedious- it's a lot of hard work. Be prepared to give it all you've got. Good luck!!

I'm 37. I will be 38 in December. Haven't been in school for 15 years. I am loving it this time around. I feel I am getting much more out of my schooling now than when I was younger. I can relate better to my professors also. I think this is the most fun I ever had.

I really appreciate the positivity. I have been trying to refresh my algebra, English and reading in preparation for starting my prereqs. Good luck to us all!

Good day:

I just turned 50 this past May, and started working on my prerequisites for an RN program this past June. You will do well in your late 30's and early 40's.

Once you are accepted into a college, be sure to meet with your program adviser early so you know what courses you should take in what order.

https://allnurses.com/pre-nursing-student/how-get-any-846733.html is great advice for any age.

I've found that if you ask nicely (presuming the syllabus is free as it is at the college I'm attending), you can get the syllabus in advance of the class start date. That allows you to get a head start at planning out your calendar.

Do carefully consider the study time for each class, and as you add classes be sure you can handle the increased disciple required for studying, writing papers, etc. If you have to drop a class or otherwise rearrange when you take a given prerequisite, that's fine.

Thank you.
