given the choice- day shift or night shift ?

I am a new grad RN and have been working in an awesome hospital with very helpful staff. I usually am getting precepted during day hours but finally after few months I would be officially working in nights. I have my old father to take care of and somebody told me that if you insist then manager might consider me putting me in day shift. At the same time everybody says for new grads night shifts are slow paced to learn as crazy day shifts.

All new and seasoned nurses, please give me your input.

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

The manager may consider you, but beware that usually there is a waiting list of senior night staff wanting to come to days. If your manager is fair and such list exists......you probably aren't going to days any time soon. Doesn't hurt to ask though and/or get yourself on that waiting list.

Took me 2.5 yrs to get to days. Life recently took a twist and I had to relocate to a different state. Guess what? I am starting nights all over again because every single hospital I've applied to and been offered a position in, has a dreaded waiting list. :specs:

I love nights but I need normality in my life, as I am a brand new mommy and I want to be home at night with my baby. You will learn to appreciate working with NO head honchos, and other people. I especially love working weekend nights.........tee hee

Good luck
