Getting to know other members here

hello everyone!

since i am new to his website, i was curious and wanted to find out more about other nursing students attending school. so if anyone will please answer these questions, i would really appreciate it. and i want to find friends on here that can relate to me, lol. :D so here are the questions (my answers will be at the bottom):

  • what made you decide that you want to be a nurse?
  • what nursing program are you doing? (cna, lvn, lvn-rn bridge, rn, bsn, etc.)
  • what school are you or will you be attending? (if you are comfortable saying.)
  • did you take any pre-requisites at a community college or take a medical assisting program before starting?
  • any study tips or any advice for students starting nursing school?

  • i have always wanted to be a nurse since i was younger, i love to help people, i care about others, and nursing is something i can see myself doing.
  • the nursing program i am starting on july 27th is an lvn program. after i complete the lvn, i plan to do an lvn-rn bridge program.
  • i will be attending summit career college in colton, ca. i have heard a few negative comments about that school and i am just going to ignore them and not worry about them. the only thing that matters to me is that i got into a school whether its bad or good. i am not going to let a few students with negative comments about the school bring me down and crush my dreams of becoming a nurse.
  • my original plan was to attend chaffey college, do all my pre-requisites there for nursing, then go through their adn program. i took a few classes at chaffey and decided the school wasn't for me. for a while after i left there, i didn't really know what else to do about schools. last october, i enrolled at american career college (ontario campus) for medical assisting because i wanted some experience in the medical field so i would get kind of an idea as to what i was getting myself into and to see if this would help me decide if nursing is for me. i will be done with acc's medical assisting program on june 15th.
  • i need study tips and advice for nursing school, lol.

  • (stands up, waves) Hi. My name is TheSquire, and I'm a failed pre-med. (Chorus of "Hi, TheSquire") I'm aiming for some sort of APN certification, probably FNP. We'll see once I work off enough debt post-graduation so that I can go back to school yet again.
  • I'm doing a Master's Entry to Nursing Program that'll kick me out with an RN and a generalist MSN.

  • Nope - the classes from my undergraduate degree (BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology) were already sufficient.
  • Whatever you were doing in HS will not be sufficient in and of themselves. Some people need to read the book and do every practice question. Some people make three trees worth of flashcards. Others do well in small study groups, while still more combine these. Whatever gets you through.

Also, if you couldn't tell, I'm an outlier compared to most of the people on this board (even beyond whole being male bit). My example may not be typical; however, you asked, so I answered.

  • I took a 1st responder course for my son's Boy Scout troop to be able to do high adventure. The local council needed health officers for various events and asked me to join the team. I found that I loved the work and many of the health professionals I worked with thought I was a nurse. When I got the chance, I decided to go back to school and make it a career.
  • I am in an ADN graduating May 6th :grad:
  • Manatee Community College (last graduating class, will become State College of Florida, Manatee and Sarasota Counties in July)
  • Yes, did everything at the CC and will get my final pre-reqs for my BSN at the CC

Study tips:

  • Buy a few NCLEX prep books with good question banks when you first start your program and use them to study for your tests
  • Study smart. Only study the material that you have not accomplished yet. There is time enough to keep going over what you already know.
  • Find a study group. Even if you understand the material, explain it to someone else will help you grasp it better
  • Take advantage of the resources that come with your text books. Some have great online stuff, question banks and reveiw material
  • Attend class even if it seems useless. There are things discussed or emphasized in class that you just won't find in your text.
  • Take time for yourself especially the night before a test. Exercise, eat right, and spend time with family/friends. It will help you study better and be more relaxed on tests and less stressed.
