I met with the nurse recruiter for Presbyterian Hospital (part of the Penn network), and it is VERY difficult to get hired there as a new RN. She stated that you want to make sure to only apply for the clinical nurse I positions (which require 0-1 yr experience - if you attempt to apply for CNII or III, they'll autotoss your app). The positions also start internally, so techs already within the Penn network are going to have a leg up on external applicants.

She did say that they like to hire a diverse pool of applicants - that is, if you're not graduating from one of the schools in the Philadelphia area, you'll have a leg up over those of us who did (I didn't understand that one, but whatever). Additionally, she and the other recruiter like to see people who have participated in school athletics because it shows teamwork and leadership skills, so if you have those, definitely highlight them on your resume if you find a position open.

Aside from that, personally talking to them at a job fair event would probably be another good bet. They like to frequent the local job fairs, so try to meet with them there.

The places that seem to be snapping up new grads in the Philadelphia are Hahnemann (they just let go all of their techs, and are now strictly nursing care), Temple, and Einstein. Cooper has also had a lot of positions advertised if you're willing to get licensure in Jersey. Good luck!

I used to work at HUP for 4 years. Everyone I knew on my floor, including myself, was hired by employees giving the persons resume to their manager. I would talk to someone you know that already works there and have this give your resume to their manager. I really think they don't even look at the online applicants.

I know this thread is old, but jordieRN -- did you get a job locally?

I'm considering doing the BSN Express program at Villanova and was told by the professor who interviewed me that HUP loves hiring Villanova grads.

When you get closer to the end of the program, you have a Leadership clinical which is pretty much going to a unit that you chose as a preference/get assigned. During this clinical, you are pretty much the only person on your unit from your group and you act pretty independently with a nurse preceptor without your instructor being with you always. I hear that if you make good relationships during this clinical especially (since it's so close to the end of your program), a lot of units like to hire. So this is your "in".

This goes for any clinical really, actually. Make sure you make good relationships with the nurses, techs, and nurse manager. Because you want to be able to hand the manager your resume and cv at the end confidently knowing that you worked really hard, and will continue to do so if you are hired.

Also side note, a LOT of the clinical instructors have been working for yeaaaars on units in hospitals where you might want to be. So work HARD because many clinical instructors can talk to their nurse manager friends and personally recommend you.
