Getting back into NP practice

I've been out of NP practice since 1995 but may consider trying to get back into primary care practice. I maintain my ANCC certification and as a DON I am very much hands-on, which is a big need working in an addiction/mental health government hospital in Saudi Arabia. I also teach a physical assessment course as well as involvement in other educational processes, but a lot of time has passed since direct patient practice.

I am an adult NP and I became DON of our mental health division by default. I continue to learn about psychiatry but it's not my main interest.

With work on a masters in health administration ongoing, reading about addiction and psychiatry, its hard to keep up on general practice, particularly pharmacology. I found what looks to be a company that provides NP continuing education, Fitzgerald Health Education Associates and I thought that doing some review courses or NP certification prep courses might be the first step.

If I return to the States this year (looking), I thought about volunteering in a free clinic or shelter, to get experience back.

I would appreciate any feedback, ideas or similar experiences.

Thanks

Hello,

I too live overseas (Hong Kong) and I am also trying to get back into my field. I was a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I have moved 4 times since I was last licenced in a state...so unfortunatly I am doing all the paper work now. My problem is I want to work now...but not going to be easy until I get back to the states...

There is a tremendous amount of info online...I have downloaded hundreds of Podcasts onto my ITouch and listen to lectures for hours at a time, while I walk and hike. I also invested in the new Kindle from Amazon.com, and have downloaded several textbooks, so I can study when I travel,,,

I am looking at going back to get my CNM certificate. so looking into distance schools. But the practicum I cant do until I am back stateside I think.

Well good luck...

debbren,

Check out the SUNY Stony Brook CNM program. They used to allow students living abroad to complete their clinical in the country they live in with just a few trips to the campus for orientation, pelvic exam training, and procedure training such as suturing and placement of IUPC and IUFM. Good luck.

Sometimes (double check with your program) you can do clinical outside the USA if you do it with a American trained, board certified physician in your speciality or on US soil (military base or US Embassy).

I used the Fitzgerald CDs to study for the ANCC and think it would an EXCELLENT course to refresh, Especially Pharmacology. I learned more and was able to actually put everything together using her CDs.

I STILL hear her words echoing in my head in my practice, and use quotes from her information.

It is pricy but would definitly be WORTH it!!

I will check out the CD's, are they easy to find on Google? Thanks...

No they are not easy to find. If you want used (and little cheaper) the newest version is $400 new. I was able to find the yr earlier version which was $300 on ebay for about $200 but i sold for close to similar, so if you do have to pay for new, you will be able to re-sell on ebay pretty easily. On ebay sometimes they will be sold about every few weeks or so, so you just have to keep checking every day to see if anyone is selling them.

I was able to find the web site thanks. Not sure that this is what I need for Neonatal NP. I will check further...thanks.
