An anesthesiologist is a physician (MD or DO). To become one, you must earn a bachelor's degree with certain science and math prerequisites, attend 4 years of medical school, and complete a residency. Overall, you are looking at about a 12-year process to become an anesthesiologist. There's no need to become an RN before becoming an anesthesiologist. Most members of the general public fail to realize that the medical model of being a physician is purely separate from the nursing model.
A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced-practice RN.
