I'm a new grad nurse and my full time job is in the SICU in a level II hospital, but I have a part time job as a home health nurse. I'm really surprised by how much I enjoy home health and have a few questions for the group.
1) Is $25 a visit for skilled nursing plus mileage a fair rate? I am not an independent contractor, but I receive no benefits etc.
2) Where can I learn more about home health nursing? I'm interested in all areas, from hands on skills like bag technique to reimbursement etc.
3) Is starting/owning a home health agency as a long term goal the impossible dream?
4) Any book recommendations (ie: Home Health Nursing for Dummies) would also be greatly appreciated!
5) Any additional advice/tips are welcome!
Thanks for your time!

I am glad you like home health. I think for an employee the best place to learn about it is via your employer first ie) bag techinique policy, clinical policies etc. Wasn't this included in your OSHA orientation at the agency? That pay rate is higher than some but way lower than others. Good your getting mileage as not everyone is paying it anymore. What type of cases do you get?

My training consisted of going on a visit with another nurse. I have not heard the word "OSHA" mentioned.
Luckily our cases are not terribly difficult ones. Lots of clean bandages and monitoring of DM and HTN.
Jenn did the spend anytime with you on OSHA and BBP/Standard Precautions in orientation/test/tape or anything?
I am assuming they gave you PPE?
I do have PPE, but no OSHA training or anything like that. I literally went on a visit with a nurse, then was on my own. That's why I was really hoping someone would recommend a great book so I could still do a great job without much orientation.
Jenny there is a book on IC in home health. I don't remember the name but when I bought it two years ago it was around 80 dollars. I wonder if they realize how legally at risk they are.........and how they are not protecting you and the company. Sad.
Ask them for Hep B, C, A, , HIV, MRSA, VRE information.

If you aren't getting any benefits, I think you should look into getting certified as an Independent....you can bill for the full amount of $45/hr. Though I hear the paperwork to bill is horrid and most Independent's hire someone to do it for them
Jenn how are things going to for you now? Be careful if you go independent and carry excellent malpractice coverage. Find a lawyer to do a contract etc.
