Galen So far

Published

So far, I can't wait to get started on the real nursing classes. Fundamentals starts next quarter 3 along with Pharm. First quarter I took a 2 credit and a 1 credit class, this quarter I'm taking a 4 credit Math (professor goes fast but easy class, hard if you haven't had math in a while) and a 2 credit Intro to Nursing. Good news for quarter 3 is that they no longer have you take the Hesi for it, only starting quarter 4.

Awesome! I want to start there in July. I should be joining soon! I have to pass the PAX-RN in 1.5 hours first lol. Fingers are crossed!

@shrimp hey I'm happy you passed! The Pax is super easy if you recently took all prerequisites, I think. Anyways, they have changed the clinical scrubs from all white to Navy Blue! We can still use the white ones until the end of this year, it just sucks that I am stuck with them now. I love Galen, it is a nice and clean campus and they are serious about everything. You can't be late to class because they will lock the doors!

I took my prereqs 4-6 years ago, so I was a little worried. The NLN study guide and McGraw-Hill app helped me loads. One of the advisors told me about the scrubs changing to navy. That rocks. It's one of my favorite colors lol. The campus is nice. I love how they keep classes small too.

Clinical starts in the third quarter right? Do you know where you'll be doing yours? How does clinical placement work? If enrollment works out the way I think it will, I'll have the same first two quarters as you. I'd like to take micro early if possible though. I've heard horror stories about that class in conjunction with med-surg. Glad you're enjoying!

They register for you the first quarter, but after that you register on your own online. You will be able to pick your clinical dates/sites then. Definitely get all your vaccine info/physical/drug screen into verified credentials looong before the third quarter. Your account has to be reviewed by a registrar before they will unlock it and let you register for clinicals. My third quarter registration week fell on the thanksgiving week so many of us were unable to register due to verified credentials issues and only had two days because of the holiday and long story short, got put into class times/days we were unhappy with. So take care of that ASAP.

Lucky you for the blue scrubs! I will be rocking the hideous white ones that I paid a small fortune for until the end! [emoji30]

Best of luck!

My enrollment appointment was yesterday, so I'm now enrolled for my first quarter. I'm taking 7 credits total (Intro to Lit [4], Info Tech for Nurses [2], and Student Success [1]). I was hoping they'd move Micro up rather than Lit, but they said I can try during drop/add of the second quarter. Without Micro, I'll have just two classes (Math and Intro to Professional Nursing). I don't think I have access to Verified Credentials, not until after orientation anyway. I'll make sure to get that out of the way ASAP. Such a bummer about your white scrubs. The navy scrubs are gorgeous, particularly the fitted tops! I was worried because I'm tall, but they're ordering longer pants for me lol.

So far, it's been a great application/registration experience. No horror stories like some of which I've read here and on Facebook, but I'm also not giving them any leeway or wiggle room. I've been annoying and persistent with 100% successful results so far. Eeryone I've contacted from advising, financial aid, and enrollment have all gotten back to me in a very timely fashion. Hoping it remains that way.

Is there a Facebook group or something where Galen students buy used books from each other?

I have to say the same, Galen is nothing like what I have read before. Everyone in admin and faculty are nice and reachable, Financial Aid was a breeze! It all depends on how organized we as a student are. We just need to get all of our paperwork together and everything else is a piece of cake, in my opinion. We have to put in our part as well and take responsibility for it. I am so tired of reading and hearing people say, "Well for the amount of money we are paying for this school they should this or that" ummm NO. We chose this school, you honestly didnt think we would just be holding hand in hand with a teacher did you? Grow up people! Study hard, be on time, have all your paperwork ready! Stop complaining about work....everyone works...everyone! We all have kids! Life is not easy oh well! (venting) Like our success teacher said the Complainers are usually the Blamers and boy was he right! I'm staying away from those!

BTW the credentials that we need are cpr card, immunizations/titers, tb skin test with xray if positive or 2nd skin test if negative, short health history with physical form, tdap, drug panel, hep b, varicella, mmr, and have this done quick! I am trying to finish my tb skin test before my deadline next friday! I shouldve done everything earlier and now I'm rushing lol

Shrimp, if you go on campus there is a bulletin board in the lounge where people post books and whatnot. The student success coordinator also has books to loan out that other students have donated.

@nursehopeful0626 exactly! Being proactive is key, and not just at this school, but any. I was apprehensive initially and first went to the campus a little defense. So far, they've given me absolutely no reason to worry. :)

@111th thank you! I wasn't expecting my first quarter books to be expensive, but they are. I might just rent a few.

I have rented all my books to this point on Amazon and get free shipping for being a student with Amazon Prime you just need to use your student email! I have spent no more than $50 renting in each quarter for all books.
