  1. ok i missed 2 weeks of school with pneumonia and finally was able to get the assignments that will be due monday when i go back to school. i missed the lectures on catheter care but have read the chapter twice in taylors fundamentals of nursing i have found most of the answers except these few. if anyone knows them or knows of a site where i can find them i would appreciate it. 1. list 3 nursing actions that are designed to decrease infection in the urinary bladder while a retention catheter is in place. i have: aseptic technique on insertion, aseptic technique on emptying and cleaning frequently from insertion point downward making sure to rinse thoroughly. 2. describe two reasons for using an external catheter and leg bad. when voluntary control of urination is not possible in males like very young children and the elderly, also used to decrease the risk of damage if stricture is believed to be a problem inorder to prevent serious injury. 3. what is the easiest way to carry a urinary drainage bad while ambulating? what is safest way? why this is one i haven't found discussed in the book, i have a feeling it came straight from lectures i missed. 4. what would you do about the drainage bad and tubing when the patient is: ambulating - i don't know as i didn't know the answer to the previous question either. sitting in a chair - put the bag in a cover if one is available, hang on lower rung of chair, and adjust the tubing so it does not hang below the bag so the urine does not back-up into the catheter transported in a wheelchair - i believe it is the same answer as sitting in a chair but you may be able to hang bag from crossbars under w/c if there are any, and again adjust the tubing. i would just ask the instructors on monday but all my make-up work has to be turned in by 9am and i have an 8am-10am class.
  2. I fell down our stairs and broke my wrist last night, I am wondering if anyone is using or has used this book for Nursing I who would be willing to send me a copy of their notes until my wrist heals (it is my writing hand). I would simply type them but it has taken me almost 4 minutes just to type this one.
  3. I graduated in 97 with an AS in Emergency Medicine, one semester short of a dual degree in Human Services. Well since I have decided to go back to the same school I graduated from to take nursing I am considering taking the remaining courses to get the Human Services Degree along with my ASN. But I haven't taken any psychology courses since 95, I remember quite a bit of it but I am wondering if I will remember enough to pass Abnormal Psychology. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  4. I am taking A&P I this semester and then A&P II and Microbiology next semester. That is how they do it here. If you did ok in Algebra you should do fine in Statistics, its really just simple algebra math with different applications and concepts. My classes start on the 25th also.
  5. I have an associates degree already and was granted a pell grant. As for the stafford loans, when you complete your FASFA put on that you are interested in loans. Then the school will certify that you are interested in loans. Then they will tell you what your loan maximum available is. Then you do the entrance counseling for the loan. Then choose your lender. Higher Education Services will then guarentee the loan. Then your lender sends your request to your school. The school verifies the amount they certified you needed or wanted. Then the loan is granted and sent to your school about 10 days before the semester starts.
  6. my school used the exact same book marieb human anatomy & physiology, i am also taking nursing i, abnormal psych, and a required pe class. i also have to refresh my intermediate emt for my fire department. my 2 year old is also starting early headstart next week as he needs speech therapy because he is over a year delayed even though he has been getting early intervention for the last 3 months. which annoys me but is a whole different thread. on top of all that i am getting married the second weekend in october and then we go to court in november for my fiance' to adopt ryan. so it will be a very very busy semester for me
  7. Here are some packets that I gave other students also, it is great if you don't know a lot of math as it starts at the beginning with detailed answers all the way through. If you have any questions on it let me know. I also am starting in a few weeks. But I have been and EMT for 10 years and I am also a Pharmacy Technician so I am hoping its a little easier for me since I have been out of school for 10 years, have a 2 year old and am getting married in october.
  8. you have four pieces of info a) 400 mg in 250 ml of iv solution b) running at 23ml/hr c) kg is 79.5 d) need mcg/kg/min therefore first determine how many milligrams/hour is being delivered by the iv pump. the rate of the iv (ml/hr) is divided by the volume of the iv bag (ml available), then multiply this result by the total amount of medication (mg) in the iv bag. [color=#663333] rate ml available [color=#663333]x dose available becomes 23ml/hr 250ml x 400mg which = 36.8 mg/hr next, after the milligrams/hour has been determined, use the next formula to convert from milligrams/hour to mcg/kg/min. [color=#663333] mg 60min [color=#663333]x 1000 / kg becomes 36.8mg 60min x 1000 / 79.5 which = 7.71 mcg/kg/min hope this helps, also check out this link, it is a database of all kinds of medical calculators and examples of how to do the different problems. -bettyjo
  9. Mine was also similar and since I am commuting and have a 2 year old I accepted everything. Because the loans can be used for transportation, childcare, educational expenses, books, meals, etc...So I figured it an emergency came up I could request the refund from my school and if not then just roll it over to spring semester. We also have a campus spending account here that we can use at the bookstore and little department store on campus, I used the max 3000 from my student loans and put it in that so I did not have to worry about money for books, pens, paper, binders, scrubs, shoes, supplies, laundry stuff, etc. I know I won't use but half of it this semester as books are 1500 for this semester so I figure I will roll that over also to next semester. Then when my loan comes in for next semester I will only keep what I am short from what I rolled over so I probably wont need my unsub next year at all. You have to be careful how much you accept over what you actually need because there is a cap on cumulative amount for 2 year and 4 year. Any other questions let me know as this is my 3rd time around with all the financial aid stuff having 2 degrees in EMS now going to get my RN so I can be a flight nurse
  10. Here is 2 math packets that really help with med math if you are confused. Any questions let me know.
  11. Having had both MRSA and VRE 5+ years ago as I patient I can tell you I cry everytime I need to be admitted to the hospital because I know that I am going to be on contact precautions which means my 2 year old cant see me. Now I completely understood being on precautions when I the cultures were positive but I am tested every 6 months and every test has been negative. I realize the seriousness of both diseases, however, at some point you just have to go on to other worries. I live in a very rural area and was transferred 3 hours away to a large hospital because of my history of MRSA and VRE just because I had a fever of 102. They said it was the best thing to do with my history but never did they consider the stress they were causing me or the emotional trauma of being so far from my son without very good reason. I got to the "city" hospital and was released 72 hours later with negative cultures and no reason for the fever. Talk about a waste of insurance money, not only was I a emergency transfer taking one of our two ambulances out of service for 7+ hours, but the "city" hospital ran over 20 tests all for nothing.
  12. I am taking Nursing I and A&P I, I was given a Fundamentals Book and study guide by someone who graduated 2 years ago. But even without that my books are going to cost me $1400, I am also required to buy a PDA $300 and the software from unbound media $153. So I am looking at about $2000. Some of the books we use the entire 2 years, but next semester it will be another $500 just for Nursing II, that does not include A&P II or microbiology. Since I am using student loans to pay for my books I am required to buy them from the campus bookstore.
  13. I can't answer from a nursing standpoint, but I can from a patient standpoint. I have had 31 PICC lines mainly due to needing phenergan IV for gastroparesis. It did not need to be diluted for a PICC line, I just had to make sure I drew it up with a filter needle into a 10cc syringe and flushed it with atleast 5cc of NS before and 5cc after. It never burned or anything like that, but I can tell you that if you don't push it slowly the pt. will get very woozy feeling very quickly like in 2-3 seconds, almost like high. When I was very nauseated I would often not have my mind on pushing it slowly just on getting relief as fast as possible.
  14. A medication and allergy section was on my college physical form that the doctor had to fill out. I still do not know the answer. I am going to ask the school health center when I turn in my physical if I need to let the instructors know. If I am not required to I probably will anyways just because I do have other medical problems and it is not listed on my medic alert bracelet. I just don't want it to affect my clinicals or be judged because of it.
  15. Like the last poster I am also on methadone but for chronic pain. It is an extremely low dose 2.5 mg every 8 hours. It does not interfere in my ability to be an EMT in NY state even at the intermediate level; but I am starting nursing school later this month and we start clinicals our very first week. It was listed on my health form but do I need to let the teachers know also?
