FNP school with work gap?

Published

Hello!

I'll be graduating with BSN from Texas Tech in April '22.  I want to continue on for my master's in FNP.  However, I left bedside care in 9/2015 to stay at home with my kids.  Before this, I had 15 years of bedside care experience (med/surg, ICU, PACU).

Has anyone been in the same situation and been accepted to and/or successfully completed their FNP?

My work gap concerns me as my experience isn't recent and I'm wondering how this would impact my ability to be successful in an FPN program.

Thanks

You will likely find that acceptance into a program isn't going to be a problem at all, but when you get into the clinical portions without recent experience, you may struggle a bit trying to both refresh your already gained knowledge in addition to expanding your knowledge base. However, you are intending FNP and you may not even have a rotation that require med-surg or ICU specifically, so you may be just fine. Good luck with your plans.
