Flu shot 2010-2011

As a nursing student I am trying to educate myself about medications, vaccinations, procedures, etc. So I was shocked to find out after I had recieved my yearly flu shot that they have combined it with the H1N1 vaccine as well. Going in to get myself and my daughter our shots I thought we were recieving the plain old flu shot but little did I know! After going to clinical that afternoon I was informed by a hospital employee that the shot included the H1N1 vaccine. I was actually kind of upset about this and still am to a certain degree. As a soon to be nurse and a patient in this situation I know it is important to give informed consent which means on behalf of the RN who gave my shot she slacked in her job. She never made me aware or even brought it to my attention. I am wondering how you all feel about this?

I get the flu shot every year no problems (did not get the swine flu vaccine last year because I was still a student, and my hospital said they would only give employees the shot). Anyway this year I had a pretty severe allergic reaction to the shot (missed 8 shifts and had to go out on workers comp).

I still plan on getting vaccine next year. The Dr feels I can take the live virus and will not have a reaction. I got the flu every year for 3 years at Christmas, and have not gotten once since starting the flu shot about 8 years ago. Crap happens, but its rare. My threes kiddos, and my parents all go their flu shot no problem.

I have always signed a consent at the CVS Pharmacy, the Grocery store clinic, the health department fair, and my job. Here in my state I believe its illegal for them to administer a vaccine without giving you the informed consent paper, and getting a signature. I would check into that where you live.
