Fitting in...

It really depends on the unit. In my past life as a traveler, I encountered units that embraced me with open arms, hug, and lots of nights at bars, but I also worked on units that honestly didn't know my name in the three months I was there. It certainly helps if you have an outgoing personality, but if you run into a staff that blows you off, don't take it too personally and realize that in a few weeks you can move on.

Always work your butt off though and don't skimp on best practice. That's the best and easiest way to be appreciated.

Hi, I am about to begin my first assignment as a traveler in VA. I will be on a med/surg tele unit.

I am in my early 20s and really want to get out and do/see things.

Question: Are staff usually open or closed to having the traveler tag along for social events and whats the best way to blend myself in?

As MNC said, it really varies from place to place. I've found the best way to approach it is to ask the staff (when you have some time for chat) "What are the fun things to do around here that aren't on the usual tourist lists?". People tend to enjoy giving you the "insider" info. and will sometimes offer to show you around. Or you can say - "That sounds fun - would you like to join me?" Being outgoing really helps. Ask around at the hospital or apartment complex for other travelers at the hospital - they are likely looking for someone to do things with also. And finally - take a chance and go to some (safe) places and events on your own. There you will likely meet people who enjoy the same things - and who will admire your nerve in striking out on your own!

Hi, I am in my mid 20s too and like to go out! :thankya: I never know what to expect when I get to a unit. It really DOES depend on your personality and if you are outgoing. I am so I usually make at least one friend to do things with. Be friendly and do your job well! A good bit of advice is not to be afraid to go out and do things alone... Its more fun than u would think!
