First aid for School Nurses

Hi, I have just been hired for my dream job as a District School Nurse and I am now waiting for the background check and preliminary credential to be completed. My HR contact mentioned that I need to take a First Aid course. I asked if she meant BLS, and she stated it had to be First Aid. I know it can't hurt, but are there First Aid courses for Healthcare Providers? Have any other School Nurses taken First Aid for their jobs? My background is Med/Surg and Telemetry. Any input would be welcome!

i've never heard of a school nurse needing to take any first aid course beyond their nursing training. I will tell you that I did challenge the EMT-B course in my state which involved a weekend class and an exam. I did find it interesting and learned a few things that i didn't know as a nurse - like how to use oral and nasal airways. I thought it was useful to have thay type of traininig in a school setting, but i don't think it's vital for a school nurse to be an emt. just my 2cents

Thank you for your reply!

I sat in on an ASEP course for coaches (more for my own benefit as I deal with HS aged student athletes) but there is no requirement....although a refresher in basics is never a bad thing to make sure we are all using EBP...
