Congrats to all of you going to Frontier and other programs! Very inspiring! I am just wondering if any of you have any creative ideas or tips for financing your programs. 20+K - yikes! I already have way too many student loans to pay. Thanks.

The U.S. Air Force has a robust midwife program and they pay for the education. I know it's not for everyone, but it's one of the few options to get midwifery school paid for.

I love your username by the way!

Since I'm doing the bridge program, total cost is going to be $36k++. I plan on loans, applying for whatever scholarships I can, etc. I also only have about $6500 left on my nursing school loans to pay back, so I'm not too bad off to start.

Student loans all the way. I just hope I have a job when it's time to start making those payments. (gasp) lol. Shannon

Uh, yeah, I second that notion.

The IHS will pay for school loans if you agree to work for them for 24 mths- also there is some form of loan forgiveness in you our getting a AP degree and work in a communty of need.

I am a childbirth educator and I have been setting aside that money to fund my education. I will continue to hold class while attending Frontier and hope to not have to take loans out. We shall see.

Please excuse me if this is a dumb question, but what is IHS?

Indian Health Service:)

any other ideas here, for specifically midwifery? Aren't there some loans especially for that field? I'm trying to get creative too.

I am considering the National health Service Corp, they reimburse you, for years of service, as well, and you have to work in an area that is underserved, approved by them, it's goverment program.

But, my problem is how do I pay for it upfront, I'm actually using tuition reimbursement at my hospital, but again I have to pay upfront initially.

If you take out student loans, the IHS will repay them up to a certain amount of $. I think they repay a predetermined amount per year.

From the IHS website:

Qualifying Loans

The LRP repays qualifying health professions education loans. For consolidated loans (health professions education loans combined with non-health professions education loans), only the health professions education portion can be repaid by the LRP.

LRP awards up to $20,000 per year for participants who sign a two-year service contract. Please see the LRP Payment Examples below for award and tax allocation details.

I tried to look around on the IHS site and I couldn't find where it said they would just give you up to $20,000 in cash each year if you happened to come to them w/o student loans. So I would probably deduct, you actually must have student loans to qualify for this program.

I know from visiting other boards on this website, the $$$$$ from HRSA is VERY difficult to get, comes with about 40,000 stipulations and it is a tax nightmare and you end up seeing (and being able to pay off) only a fraction of your student loans because of the tax nightmare. There is an excellent thread about it on the NP forums.

For me, I'll just take out lots of student loans, apply for the occasional scholarship I can find and hope and pray I get a decent job when I graduate.
