In my district we kept all 10 nurses and no reduction in hours. However, 580 teachers got pink slips in my county. It's dreadful!

We lost a handful of teachers, fortunately no nurses. They are cutting electives. Also got rid of quite a few instructional aides on the elementary level.

They cut all part-time employees, raised class sizes, cut electives, cut tutoring and sports programs, eliminated several bus routes and cut a lot of non-tenured teachers. The biggest problem here is that the surrounding counties are suffering as much as we are, so teachers who lost their jobs are in competition with over 1000 other unemployed teachers.

This really hit home for my family. Our DS15 is profoundly mentally handicapped. He had a teaching team (2 teachers job sharing). One had 30 years and the other had 5yrs experience IN SEVERE/PROFOUND special ed. And the county let them go. Tell me why this makes sense? Who thinks it's a good idea to let that kind of resource get away? It's not like you can pick up a new severe/profound teacher at every job fair. It is an extremely specialized field within a field. We are just about sick over it. DS doesn't take change well to start with. Its just a shame that he has to get used to all new teachers in his last year of MS. Because he has to do it all over again when he goes to HS next year. Color me mad.

I am so sorry to hear about that. It sounds like it is going to be a tough year.
