failed the nclex second time at 75

Published

I worked up the courage to take the board exam once again but I failed at 75 questions this time. I used the Saunders and Lacharity book and saunders flashcards as well. I am scared to try it the third time. Please suggestions or tips for me.

It seems that you are missing something and missing it by a goodly amount: either your content knowledge is weak enough to not allow you to get to the passing level, or your ability to apply that knowledge (critical thinking, strategy) is not strong enough to let you pass either.

Typically, the CPR is a decent starting point to see where you fell down. It should tell you where you were near passing, or above passing, so you can work on a new study plan.

At this point I think I'd check in with your alma mater, see what resources they can offer you in the way of a tutor, etc. If they are a school with a decent passing rate, they have a vested interest in helping you to pass. If it's a school with a less-than-stellar record, you might be better off getting a tutor yourself and going from there.

Good luck!

^^ I agree with the comment above me. KNOW YOUR CONTENT! Do questions! & know test-taking strategies! But honestly, how can you do questions and strategies if you do not know your content? If I asked you about a disease, you should describe it to me and give me nursing interventions. But start with your CPR and ask yourself what is possible you are doing wrong that made YOU not pass.

Hmm its not possible to know s/s of each disease ...I forget everything with in an hr after reading. Seems like nursing is not for me.

You do need to become familiar with the most commonplace diseases and disorders, as they are considered to be part of the basic nursing knowledge an entry-to-practice nurse would reasonably expect to know. EVERY s/s of every disease? Of course not, but you do have to hit the major ones.

As for forgetting everything an hour after reading it, this simply can't be true, or you wouldn't have passed nursing school. You're frustrated and dissappointed, but that doesn't mean this is impossible. Follow the suggestions I gave you, and go from there.

Good luck.

Thank you for your support. I am practicing NCSBN and scores are 50-70. So dissapointed with my knowledge.

Don't stop now, retake the exam again as soon as you can or else you'll gonna end up like me. I am now struggling with my schedules at home, at work and finding time to study. I regret that I did not retake the nclex again while the information in my head are still fresh. Now, I am studying as much as I can in preparation for my third attempt after 2 years and I'll say it again DON'T WAIT TOO LONG, retake the nclex soon. I also find all nurses very helpful and encouraging that's why I visit it once in awhile to read some good stuff and give a little encouragement too. Good luck, don't feel defeated, not now or ever.:)

Of course not! But like RNsRWe as mentioned, you need to know the major S/S of the main diseases such as CHF, emphysema, renal failure, and etc.

I understand you are upset and frustrated, but look at this as a lesson and you looking at the big picture. If you find yourself not retaining anything, reevaluate your study habits. Have you thought about doing the Hurst review? I recommend that for content! ANYWAY, give credit to yourself. You passed nursing school and NCLEX is just another test. Have faith, positivity, and confidence!

If you truly believe nursing isn't for you, then don't do it. Simple as that.

But if you believe you can touch people and make a difference, there is nothing your heart and mind cannot do.

It may seem a little crazy, but check out Pinterest. There are many posts from nursing students who very creatively made visual study guides for many different disease processes and conditions. I am a visual learner.....would have helped me way back when. I totally understand the fear and trepidation, but I do agree sooner rather than later is the route to go. Good Luck!!!!!

Hi! Please do not lose hope.

I did not do any review at a review center as I am in Australia (at the moment, and during the preparation phase of my exam) I passed on my first attempt.

Here are my materials:

1. Lippincott's Q and A for the NCLEX RN

2. Saunder's 6th edition Comprehensive Review NCLEX-RN

3. Illustrated Study Guide NCLEX RN

4. Lippincott's Alternate Format Questions

5. Kaplan Premier NCLEX RN 2014-2015

I've read everything from cover to cover and answered all the questions. I studied for 4hrs, 6 days a week. Give yourself breaks in between your study period and carry on with your routine.

It's also a matter of mind setting. You have to believe that you will pass in order to pass.

Good luck. :)

Please do not give up please read my story under plastic 100%. God Bless
