Excited and Nervous!!!

Has anyone else been accepted into nursing, but doesn't have ANY previous experience with the medical field? I am soo excited, but I am getting worried too. I am only 19 and feel like I am going to be starting on such a blank page. Anybody else think this? Thanks!

I'm waiting on my acceptance letter. I will find out by next week. I have no previous experience. I'm 41 and have raised children since I was 21. I went back to school in 2000, and worked at our local school for my first job. I thought I was going to teach, but just didin't feel right going that route. I feel really comfortable taking the A&P I and IIn and graduated in May 04 with my Associate in Arts degree (basic courses). After finishing the Nursing Program as an LPN, I can test for an RN Lisence, and finish 6 or so courses to get my BSN. At least that is my plan we'll see if it all goes that way. I too am excited, can't wait to get started. Best wishes in all you do!!!!

I had no medical experience, but I did have 5 yrs corporate expereince. My advice is to always be professional. Sometimes, it would be nice to have medical experience. But they have to unlearn some things in order to get a good grade, so it's not perfect for them either. When you're on the floor, act courteous, professional, no loud talking (problem for some slightly younger classmates), and keep the gossiping to a minimum, if any. Watching medical tv shows seems to help a little too. :chuckle

Hey if you are not going to school this summer you can volunteer at a hosp. I do and I love it. I discharge patients, admit them, sometimes I go and talk to them. I'm always on the peds floor with the nurses and I am 20 years old with a 3 year old boy. I will start my pre-reqs this May and I will be ready to apply sometimes in the spring of 07 I could apply this spring but I don't to do no gerenals classes with my nursing.

well Good Luck and volunteering gives me alot of insight to the medical field. At lunch I hang out the nurses...I love it

I was 20 when i started in my nursing program. Now im 21 and have 2 more semsters left. I went in with no experience. You can help out at a local hospital, but you won't be doing much with the patients. It is kind of nice starting off a blank page because you don't have those habits that some of my classmates have. Some were EMT's, so they are used to doing assessments a certain way and now they are told to do it differnt. Just enjoy your time before you start your program because once you start it will eat up a lot of your time.

I feel the exact same way as you do!!I'm still in high school at the moment and I'm attending nursing school in August...I don't know what to expect, but I've relied on moral support and reassurance from others to boost my confidence...I just keep thinking about the reward of helping others as my drive to do well with NS...I've been through a lot physically and emotionally in my life and I've gained so much patience, kindness, and compassion towards others...This reassures me that I will make a great nurse..These are the kinds of things that ease the stressors of the anticipation of school.....You must be confident!!!
