I am a work comp case manager..used to be an ED nurse tho..What does an ED case manager do? I love case management and I loved the ED so if it sounds fun maybe next time I "reinvent" myself I may look at it. What types of dutues do you have?? Thanks Erin

Erin - I work in a 550 bed level one trauma center and am one of three ER case managers. We do the Inter-qual stuff for SI/IS and determine whether observation or full admit is correct. We also do preliminary DRG assignment. We also do the paperwork for tranports back to NH and other facilities. The best thing we do (I feel) is the discharge planning - making sure patients know what resources are available and getting them hooked up with them. It really takes a load off the staff nurses.

There is a discussion about ED Case Management on the RNCaseManager.com board you might find helpful in locating other ED CMs.

Do you find assisting patients with what other resources are available has decreased the abuse of your ER? Have you been helping your uninsured patients find alternatives for care in the future?
