EMT-P to RN

Hi everyone. I am currently in the coast guard and will be attending paramedic school this next semester. I will be serving four more years and then I plan on working as a paramedic until I become a registered nurse. I would love to get some input as to the best programs to attend and if you have any suggestions for making the transition easier.

I am a paramedic that is doing a traditional (5 semester) BSN program. The biggest thing to remember is that the way a medic is taught to think (similar to a medical model) is very different from the Nursing model.. That was the biggest struggle for me...

As far as education.. there are many medic to RN transition courses around the country in which you could graduate in little as a year.. There is one in my state, but I chose not to attend for 2 reasons 1st the distance was too far and 2nd they award an ASN degree at the end.. so I chose a local University for the traditional route since it was closer and because of scholarships awarded it was actually cheaper for me than any of the ASN degrees would have been.. win - win :)

Best of luck.

Thanks really appreciate the help. so do you think i should go for a ASN to become a RN and then a BSN or just a four year program for a BSN?

I would research the area that you are interested in working and find out how easy it is for ASNs to get jobs and where they are getting those jobs.. If you can get hired where you would like to be I would suggest doing the ASN 1st then BSN bridge...

Guess I didn't mention that I already had a degree so already had all the pre-reqs for the BSN program :) sorry if that added any confusion.
