Dumb Question

Im new to all this... just trudging along taking the pre-reqs to get into the RN programs. What I really want is to get into Sac State so Im taking all those pre-reqs too.

OK, to my question - what are points and how do you get them? I know - I should know this. I know Sac State is based on points and Id like to get as many as I can which means I need to know what the heck they are!

Thanks in advance.

The school where I started my pre-reqs in another state (Oklahoma) had handouts for their nursing program and it said on each handout exactly how to get the points. Tests, classes, and prior degrees or experience seem to be the normal ways to get points.

Ah.. thank you. :yeah: I never thought to look up Sac States stuff since I wont be there for another couple of years! :banghead:

Not a dumb question at all. However, you want to make sure that you do your research for each school you are applying to. Are you only planning on applying to Sac State? In my own experience, Ive learned that Sac State has a very competitive program that is very difficult to get in to - possibly one of the hardest in CA. Sac States Points System consists of GPA of your previous 30 units plus prereqs, TEAS score, and you can get extra points for foreign language, health care experience, and for disadvantaged students. For the Fall 08 - the POints cutoff was 74 pts i believe and for spring it jumped 10 points to 84, which is crazy. People get turned away with a 3.8 GPA all the time, so you have to make sure that you can acquire as many points as possible. For next fall, i should have 89 points - i pray that is enough, but you never know anymore. Hope i helped

Im going to apply to Sierra, San Joaquin Delta, Sac City, ARC, and Sac State. I want my Masters Degree but want my options open. If I get into associates program I'll take that then do the program to get my BSN but Id prefer to skip that step and just go to Sac State. Whatever happens happens I guess.

Sac State is my only option for BSN since I live in Rocklin and have a daughter and husband and we cannot move since he is a Convalescent Home Admin and there's not a lot of job openings for those and I cannot commute 4 hrs a day to go to school.

I honestly know nothing about this process - about the schools, etc. Ive been to the nursing websites, etc but its all so confusing.

You might also want to consider Samuel Merritt College. It is a private school, so it's expensive, but because of that it is also easier to get into (no wait lists). I think their grads have a pretty good reputation, from what I have heard. FYI, they are based out of Oakland, but they have a Sacramento campus as well.

Oh awesome! Thanks! I'd rather pay a bit more than have to wait 2 years to get into a program.

So check out their website--be sure to check Samuel Merritt College and not just Merritt College (both are in Oakland, but the latter is a community college). SMC has a couple of pre-reqs that other schools don't have (pathophysiology and pharmacology), but you can take them both online at various community colleges. For instance, I live(d) in San Francisco, but I took pharmacology online through Long Beach City College (Faye Gregory, the instructor, is great!). And I took pathophysio online through UCLA Extension (it was a little more expensive, but the timing really worked well for me--and that instructor (Judith Halle) was amazing!).

Also, you have to the NET entrance test, but it's a fairly easy test (not anything like the GRE).

Hope this helps. You can always PM me if you have other questions. In the end, I didn't end up applying to SMC, but I spent a lot of time researching them.

If you don't get requirements sheets in person by visiting a program or attending the info session, you can usually have them mailed or emailed to you by calling the office. These sheets normally give a lot more info than you can find in the college catalog.

Im going to go to the Sac State advisory meeting and I looked up Samuel Merritt College to get more info on it. Thanks again.

You are so right, I am very stuck up and not supportive....

I wouldn't recommend Delta. Their program is going through a lot of changes and needs a lot of work. Program directors are aware of this and it may take a year or two to get everything situated. let me know if you have any more questions.
