Hi!!
I have been working in Florida as an RN for 5 years. I recently got a DUI in March. Unfortunately I was involved in a bad accident with another vehicle. I was only charged with a 2nd degree misdemeanor DUI, lucky for me, because in FLorida if you "seriously" injure another it can be considered a felony charge. My lawyer said it was in my best interest to plead "no contest" to the misdemeanor and get out the system fast, because they could change the charges at any time. I know that the people in the other car were treated and released from the ER, but dont no what the injuries were. I have never been in trouble before, never been pulled over by a cop, never been in an accident. This has been without a doubt the scariest experience of my life. I am dealing with the legal consequences (6 month license suspension, community service etc.), the insurance consequences, and the fact that the people I hit may try to sue me for punitive damages. I have been relying on friends to drive me everywhere I need to go, including work. I have no family here. The thought of what could have happened to me or to the people I hit are nearly impossible to live with. If I can just keep one of you from ever drinking and driving again I will consider it a blessing. I self reported to the Florida BON, and even spoke with the executive director. They are now conducting an investigation. Anyone out there in Florida with a DUI that the board knows about?? what kind of disciplinary action do they impose??? anyone have trouble getting a job with a DUI on their record ??? your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

HI, sorry to hear about your troubles but it sounds like you have learned not to drink and drive. Thats a blessing and that noone was seriously hurt. Do you drink very often or was this a random thing? Did they make you go to AA? Just asking. Be thankfull everyone is ok, do your penance, never drink and drive again and then finally forgive yourself and allow some peace in your life to move on.

Each case is handled individually by a Board of Nursing, and only they can make the determination as to what will happen. No two are the same, and are never treated the same.
