Dsage Caculations

I'm taking a class called Dosage Calculations. I am having fits with the apothecary system (changing those measurements to metric and metric to apothecary). The fractions are the worst...changing something like gr 1/150 to mg, and stuff like that. Is there an easy way of mastering this?

Speed counts for nothing; accuracy counts for everything.

OMG, this is so true.

Like the other poster said, errors kill and if you take that seriously, you will always take the time to do it correctly. Plus, in real world nursing, every calculation should be double checked by another nurse

Fabulous!! That's the part I was missing. I was trying to put 1/150 then have a denominator under that.

By the way...I had a long talk with my instructor today. I signed up for a free tutor. The instructor said I was doing real well other than those few concepts, but I'm anal about my grades,so it had to be done.

I applaud you for seeking out a tutor. Those skills are very important. Not all meds are premixed nor do you always use an infusion pump, at least not at our hospital.

Don't think of it as being anal about your grades (I'm not really sure what that means but anyway), think of it as wanting to master a concept that's part of safe nursing practice.

Good for you!

It's basically the same thing for me. I expect myself to be the best at anything I do. And, like you say, nowhere is it more important than with medications.
