Hi, i know this might seem like a stupid question, but is there any where that i can take a drug competency test that is recognised in the NHS. For various reasons i was not able to complete it during my first job as a nurse.

any help/advice would be extremely helpful.

thanks:wink2:

Bugsy I'm a little confused about exactly what you mean, if your a qualified nurse then you should have completed a drugs assessment within your training do you mean IV competencies, if so you will need to speak to your employing trust as the training and assessment will be individual to that trust

what i meant was that when i starte i had to do a preceptership year and we had to do a drug work book and pass a practical drug round with another nurse. i managed to pass the drug round but had a couple of difficulties with the paperwork as i have dyslexia and i had a mentor and ward sister who didn't understand dyslexia. i know my drugs calculations etc.. and yes i was deemed safe during my practical. during my training al we had was an on-line test which some people were able to cheat, because you could do it over again until you got all the questions right. also we were not taught about the different drugs out there 'in the real world'. also all we had was about 15 minutes looking round a fake drug trolly.

thanks

I take it this was as a qualified nurse then, Are you still working there, what was the advice for retaking this assessment and did you approach your HR department about any special requirements you have for your dyslexia. If you were deemed safe to practice then I'm not sure that you would need any further training, if there were recommendations from your assessment then your training educator / professional development nurses should be able to help.

in my trust you have to be signeed off to do drugs. we doa bookelt and need to do do non-controlled and controlled meds with a band 6 or higher nurse.
