Driver license

Do you have to change your drivers license everytime you change jobs?

Featured Replies

No, and you should not as a traveler. Changing your driver's license can be de facto evidence to the IRS that you have abandoned your tax home and are not eligible for tax free housing, per diems, and travel pay. And you may have to pay big bucks in back taxes, interest, and penalties on those benefits already received. Don't do it.

Yes, in most states you have limited time to change your license, as little as a couple of weeks, after you have moved there. But you haven't moved there. You are working away from your own home temporarily. Your contract (a copy of which is a good idea to carry in your car) is proof that you are there for a limited time to show to the nice officer. He may still not buy that argument, not being familiar with the niceties of residency law. Just take the ticket, and have your day in court. The judge will recognize that you are not a permanent resident of their great state, let you go, and lecture the officer on the law.
