i asked for help yesterday about calculating drip rates on pumps but today, my 2nd day i came home sobbing tears for nearly 2 hours : (
my patient is post bypass and ended up w/ a colon resection. the "family" is upset espically with the weekend and the surgeon gone, no anwers and i guess i look like a victum and was her scape goat today. i gave 100% on day 2 of returning to nursing after some time off and basically got reemed good. i took it pretty good on the job but it hurt me so deepy by time i walked through the door at home. i am human and need to be respected like the next person. what can i do to be effective, professional but not eaten alive by "the family?" i wish to god that i could work nights but i just can't sleep during the day. is something wrong w/ me? i'm not a "10" but what can i do to repeal the cursing tongue of "the family?" i am wondering just what i got myself into but what else can pay so well and offer such great benefits? help me lord!!! hurting kitten

sorry to hear of your situation with the "family"...know that the family is not upset with you but of the situation and unfortunately you were the one to take the brunt of the "anger"...you will encounter this behavior through out your nursing career...as hard as it is do not take it personally...I know easier said then done...not that I am in anyway excusing the "family" for their behavior, but unfortunately it happens....hope you have a better shift next time...:)

As you learn you will also learn effective and polite ways to get limits across to families. You'll be able to set limits on how someone who is being angry and unreasonable can make you feel. This is just a growing pain- you did OK, and it does get better.
just to set the record straight, i'm close to a 20 yr. vet that had to attend to personal family matters and took several years off. i'm going in today for another. was just thinking how my time can be better spend on technical things than getting tied up with my head and arms full of poop (the family). i know, i was the "family" myself and don't think i/we were angry and rude to staff, of course the doctors are like "god" and can do no wrong, maybe i am just mopping up their crap. wish me well today!!!! purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
