dress code b4 clocking in

the hospital that i work at (northwest suburb of chgo) has just started a policy that requires all employees to dress ''business casual'' when coming to work, at work, and leaving work...i am an ob nurse that wears scrubs..i come to work, change into hospital furnished scrubs, clock in and work....the policy now states, no jeans, gym shoes or sandals (unless wearing hose) will be worn to or from work...most nurses, wearing scrubs at work, don't own business casual....question: can a hospital require a dress policy when we haven't clocked in yet....?

That is just ridiculous IMHO! Lots of other things the hospital could be focusing on and they choose this! Just one more reason I don't miss the hospital. hat really stinks for you guys. Which hospital is this?

I have to agree, it doesn't seem right. If you have a union, this would be a good time to get their opinion. :uhoh3:

If you are an employ are an employee at will then the answer is yes the hospital or any employer can do this. If you are unionized it would depend on what the contract says.

Illinois IS a work at will STATE. Your employer can do whatever(unless you have a contract-ie:union). If Bush's labor law passes(which our Governor recently vetoed the Senate version), your employer will not be required to pay you overtime. This is to help stimulate the economy. The hospitals are supporting the bill. Suprise!

Fortunately I work in a union hospital and presumably won't be affected by the OT bill - I tend to think this bill will just further erode nursing as a profession and to discourage nurses from doing OT - alot of us have side jobs doing home health so we don't worry about it - I sure wouldn't go into work on an off day if I'm not getting time and a half
