Does the school matter?

Published

I was wondering if it mattered what school I choose to do my Accelerated Nursing program at. I got in at NYU, University of Miami, Loma Linda, and Union University in Nashville. Union University seems like it would be the cheapest, but I live in California and would ultimately love to get a job here. I was wondering if reputation matters depending on the school and if I would have to take more tests if I tried to come back to CA.

The biggest test that you would face when returning to California after graduation is ensuring that the California BRN would accept your clinical and didactic hours from whichever university you attended outside of California. The biggest problem with non-California graduates is ensuring that their clinical and didactic topics covered in the program occur in the same semester/quarter. Once the California BRN determines that you have met all requirements for initial licensure, you can be granted/endorsed for a license in California.

I would expect that most "traditional" programs in the US will generally meet California's requirements, though this is not guaranteed. The BRN will not likely tell you whether your proposed program will or will not meet their requirements if the program isn't already approved by the BRN itself.

Why not just go to LLU then if you already live in CA and want to work in CA? It may seem that Union University is cheaper just with school comparison, but you still have to consider the money it costs to move to Nashville, living expenses, possible part time job, having to travel back to CA after you graduate, and time/money spent if you are going back to CA during breaks, etc. Not only that, since you want to live and work in CA, going to a nursing program in CA should only make more sense and LLU is a very good university too.

Just curious as to why you applied to schools thousands of miles away from where you live, but to answer your question I would go with the cheapest option that has a good reputation and NCLEX pass rate.

I applied to out of state schools because I am still young and want to venture out. I did my undergrad at U of Hawaii and loved how much I grew going to school out of state. All of these comments are so helpful! Thank you!

Dang, must have deep pockets or mad loans, either way I am jealous. Good luck on wherever you choose.

Haha no. I was very fortunate and got my undergrad paid for through a scholarship! Thank you so much!
