Does 1 month experience count against me to get into new grad residency?

Published

Hello! I am a new grad who graduated in December. I applied to UC Davis Residency program around November/December. After much waiting I never got a call so 2 months pass and I accepted another job offer at a different hospital. That was in February. I started with my IP. In March I recieved my license so to date I have been working with my license for only 1 month. I am also still on orientiation.

Well, this week UC Davis called offering me an interview. I really want to work there but my concern is that when I applied in December I remember the application saying that to be in the program it must be your first paid RN job.

does working with my license WHILE on orientation for just one month count against me? I am so worried because I really want this job.

Thanks!

If that's what it says then yes it will count against you. I've seen some postings where they say less than 6 months experience. But one of the big residency programs here always says must have no paid nursing experience to be accepted.

Best to talk to one of the recruiters at UC Davis so you can explain your situation. Only they can give you the correct answer as to whether it will count against you or not.

Specializes in intensive and cardiac care.

Should I speak with the recruiters or bring it up when I have my interview with the unit managers?

I didn't think of doing that. I hope they say I still qualify!

Specializes in TICU.

I doubt it will count against you. In my state most residency programs are for new grads AND RNs who have less than a year of experience or no experience in that specialty. Just ask the recruiter. I really don't think its anything to worry about.
