You get the why, so you can stop right there. If you can't offer constructive advice then please don't say anything at all. The last thing this person needs is a smart aleck comment that offers ZERO help. OP asked in the hopes that others who have already been down this road can give him/her their honest opinion on what OP can do to become a stronger candidate for CRNA programs, which for the most part are incredibly competitive to get into and attracts some of the best and brightest of those in the nursing profession. If that bothers you, then just do not click on posts such as these. Simple and easy to follow, yes?

Here are the stats: ABSN at Johns Hopkins, GPA 3.7, 1.5 years of TICU experience, GRE (Verbal + Quantitative = 335, Writing 5.0). Do not have the CCRN certification. Have taken graduate level pathophysiology and pharmacology, both with a 4.0. What are my chances of being accepted to highly qualified nurse anesthesia programs? Would I stand a chance at gaining acceptance into Georgetown's or University of Maryland's programs?

CRNAHopeful - I am a total newbie in the field, I will also be starting my ABSN at Johns Hopkins this summer but I know that eventually I'd like to get my DNP, although not quite sure in what specialty. I have been looking into the various specialties and schools, however, and when in my research of UM's anesthesia program they really seemed to recommend obtaining the CCRN. Agree with one of the posters above, your best bet would probably be to contact the schools and ask them directly. Or even ask the CRNAs you have been shadowing, although you may have already done that. Just my $0.02. :)

Get your CCRN, there is no excuse not to have it. Most programs require it, but even if they don't they will ask why you don't have it when you interview. You have a good profile, but take the final step. Also, its not like the GRE...you actually learn clinically relevant pearls when you study for the CCRN that will help you when you interview! I am currently a student registered nurse anesthetist (SRNA) at the University of Scranton. My best advice would be to get your CCRN. Georgetown and University of Maryland are good programs, which surely draw hundreds of applicants. Nearly all of the competitive applicants will have their CCRN. I wouldn't necessarily apply to the programs to just see if you can get an interview. The application process requires time and money, and I wouldn't waste either. I think you would stand a great chance...especially if you interview well! I was recently accepted to University of Pittsburgh for this fall, so if you have any questions about their interivew/program let me know. Don't let anything or anyone discourage you if this is really what you want to do.

I don't think it would be a bad thing to get your CCRN, but I did not have mine for Pitt if that makes you feel any better!

Your academic stats and GRE are impressive! Take your CCRN! My advice - take your CCRN as soon as you feel prepared and apply to schools right after you have it to add to your resume. The CCRN will be fresh in your mind and studying and prepping for your interviews will be that much easier. You'll do fine. Don't be discouraged. You are well on your way. Apply and have back up programs. Don't put all your eggs in one (or two) baskets. Best of luck.

With your stats, you will be granted an interview at any school in the country. Most schools either require or highly encourage the CCRN cert, so get that out of the way and the schools will be fighting over you.
