discouraged

I am a little discouraged:o ! I am currently a student, I am finishing my pre reqs and looking into nursing school. I am looking to get a clerical job in a hospital (south jersey) while I am in school but I am finding it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE unless you know someone. I have the clerical experiences, admin assistance and even handle bodily injury claims for an insurance company however, i find that I can't even get an interview! I mostly want the job because of the flexible hrs and i figure i can get a head start and learn as much as i can about the hospital setting.

Is it really true, is it all about who you know and not what you know!? I guess I just need to vent.

Has anyone experienced the same? Can anyone give me any advise or suggestions?

I tried to get a job as a unit secretary when I started my nursing clinicals and I also found it hard to get a job. After getting hired as a nurse, I found out from someone in HR that they don't like hiring nursing students because they ultimately know that it's a temporary person they're putting into that position and they like hiring more long-term rather than replacing unit secretaries every 1-2 years. In one way it make sense, but still.....

Yeah NJNursing that does make sense. what positions would you recommend I look into or should I just wait and finish school? any advice would help, thanks;)

If you're really adamant, I agree with the others - the squeaky wheel does eventually get greased and sometimes they just see so many applicants that it all blends together after a while. Keep pushing it if it's what you really want. You might be able to try part time at a doctor's office - keep looking in your local paper under the health jobs. A friend of mine worked at an OB/GYN office her last year of school and they were cool with working around her school/clinical schedule.
