Disaster preparedness

Published

Hi all! I'm in a disaster preparedness class and have to get information about how the ICU nurse's role changes in an event of a disaster. I also need to know what issues might arise pertaining to this (EX: ICU nurse shortage, what to do if technology is down...) If anyone could give me any info at all (official websites. journals, books) it would be greatly appreciated!

I think the best thing you could do is go to the ICU of the hospital where you do your clinicals and ask to see their disaster preparedness manual/plan for a student assignment you are doing. They should have one, or the manager should know where it is. If he/she doesn't, go to the nursing office and ask about it.

Thanks that's a good idea.. the problem is I'm in a bachelor's program and I haven't started clinicals yet. This is an upper division course that I was put in because I ran out of classes to take in lower division (I'm a transfer student). Sooo... while students in clinicals have this advantage.. I'm having to find information elsewhere. I was trying to exhaust all possible alternatives before I approached her for help. Do you think that I may be able to obtain access to the disaster plan at the hospital even though I'm not in clinicals there? Or is that for personel only?

You should be able to. Try to go to a hospital that you know the students from your university do their clinicals in. Take your student ID with you and go to the nursing office and identify yourself as a nursing student in the nursing program at XXX University. Tell them what your assignment is and ask them if they will let you see their disaster preparedness manual. If they won't, try another hospital.

I did a Google search (which you probably already did), and found some interesting stuff:

Principles of Critical Care: preparing for a catastrophe

Public Hospital Disaster Plan in Wisconsin

The Volendam Fire: Lessons Learned from Disaster Research

I also found a lot of journal abstracts. Your university should also have access to the full-text.
