Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

Good luck Jess!

Yesterday I got an email from the program that I am hoping for. It was just to say that my application arrived and is complete and is in the specialty area being considered. They said that the callbacks for interviews are going to be around April first, (versus mid March).

The wait, the wait. :)

p.s. and that is only for the interview call!

I would be going nuts if I were you!!! April seems so far away!! When will you hear if you are in? I just can't stand it- I want to know that everyone is in!!!! :chuckle

If you qualify, there are scholarships and grants which you don't have to pay back. http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/ There are various loans for grads too: you can get $18,500/year for a Stafford loan, $6000/year for a Perkins loan

Thanks for posting this Smile123,

I knew that you could get $18,000.00 a year for graduate school but was unaware of a Perkins loan of $6,000.00 a year also.

The program I am hoping for costs $24,000.00 for the portion for the graduate RN certificate, (15 months, technically two years) and I knew I would be able to have $36,000 through, ($18,000 x 2).

Now I am going to look into the Perkins for grad school!!

Currently I am using an alternate loan for my final year, (graduate in May). Yikes, the interest on that started right away, and its already at $500.00 since last August. Need to start paying on that puppy real fast!!

Thing is, my back up ADN plan....sure the cost is lower because it is an ADN program but, I am not able to take any loans at all for that. I already have an Associates and will have the BA and do not have any MAP left. Pocket pinching!!

I know! I feel the same way and want to read all of us on the "got in" thread. :)

Final decisions from UIC should be May 15th. If I need to put up my earnest money at the community college to hold my seat before then, I will. I am willing to give up the $100.00 to gaurantee me cc spot and then gladly call them up to give the spot away if accepted to UIC. :p

Although, April first is also the early application deadline for Depaul's program and I may sneak in a last minute package to them too!!

Working the odds Jess, I agree its good to have the back-ups.

Congratualations! My wife and I didn't exactly elope, but we had only our immediate families and a handful of friends at ours. 12 guests altogether. My good friend Devin was the Deacon (his last job at our cathedral before going back to Massachusetts to be ordained a priest) and our friend Ann was the Priest. Small Episcopalian service on Dec. 28th, '04. Any bigger and it would have overwhelmed us! Small is better, if you ask me.

Its nice to see other members of Red Sox Nation on the board.

I wish the season already started, I would be distracted from waiting for the one letter to come.

Hi Everyone,

This morning I was in the post office mailing off my letter to UCSF asking them to reconsider my application, when I got a a call from SF-State, where I'm wait-listed, and I'm in! :chuckle

What a relief! I still have my heart set on UCSF, but at 44 years old I feel anxious to get into a program before I reach retirement age :uhoh21:

Of course I'm still holding out a slim hope that UCSF will call in off their wait-list.

I just found this discussion yesterday. I'm glad to see you get such great news!

Yay yay yay!!! Seahorse, I'm so happy for you! What great news! I bet you will get into UCSF too, and you'll have to choose between them! :chuckle

Way to go!!!

-Jess

Wooo hooo! Congratulations, Seahorse! Which MSN program at SFSU did you get into? The accelerated generic MSN? An acceptance is SOO sweet.

Well I just got an interview appointment for Samuel Merritt College's ABSN today, emailed to 9 people. They are still evaluating applications and will schedule other interview days for more people. They also just had interviews this past weekend.

Thank you, CAG12345. What did you study for your incredible number of masters degrees?
