Dipping my toe in

Hi everyone! I'm a 40 yo mom who has a bachelor's and master's in a totally unrelated field and for the first time, actually feel like it's possible for me to switch careers. Problem is, is it too late? I have no science background, I figure it'll take me 2 years of prereqs and 2 years of nursing school, assuming I even get in the first time I apply. I'll be 45 or so before I finish. And now I'm hearing that new grads can't get jobs, that would be really depressing to go from one career where it is very hard to find employment to another! Anyway, I'd love any advice or thoughts you may have.

I started back at about your age. Entered an accelerated RN at 45 graduated at 47. After a year and a half of practice it is the best job I have ever had.

Depending on the program there are probably about 5 science prerequisites to complete:

A/P I and II

microbiology

chemistry

nutrition

Expand your options to include ADN, BSN, accelerated programs. (My accelerated program was 15 months...)

The soft job market will pass.

I think it is tough to find a job in any career right now. But hopefully in 4 years when your done it won't be so hard to find work. If you have the time and money to switch careers then go for it. Your going to turn 45 anyway so why not be turning 45 and be a nurse :)

Thanks to you both for your encouragement. I'm aiming for a MN program, it's 16 months, has 9 prereqs, and is very competitive. I'll have to find some other schools to apply to as fall backs, obviously. :)
