Differnce in test for diploma RN vs BSN RN

Published

I am in a diploma nursing program and my friend is in a BSN program. Are there different test for various school programs? When I work towards my BSN or MSN will I have to retake the test or a different test for the level of education?

Thanks!

No. Everyone takes the NCLEX whether it is diploma, ADN, or BSN. They only difference is the piece of paper you graduate with.

Is it true that if you go from diploma RN to BSN RN that you have to retake the NCLEX? Or is it once you take it, that is it???

Thanks!

Tammy, once you take the NCLEX that is it! It isn't your type of education that gives you the privilege of sitting for state boards, it is the fact that you graduated from an accredited nursing program be it Diploma, ADN, or BSN. The boards are the same for all entry nurses.

Now...when you speak of education: There are nursing opportunities today that you are privy to as a BSN that in years past used to be open to all RNs regardless of whether that nurse had a diploma, associates, or bachelors. And this remains true in certain parts of the United States where hospitals are not "degree specific" as long as you hold that license to practice nursing.

If you return to college for more advanced nursing degrees, you will NOT be required to repeat the NCLEX. That's a one time thing. Thank God! :chuckle However, you will have your usual midterms and final exams to take just like with any educational program would require of you to pass.

Hope my response helps you somewhat. If not, I'd be happy to further explain things for you, or someone else will post their thoughts that may also help you.:)
