Current Navy Nurses - Question

Hey everyone!

I am currently looking into applying for the Navy Nurse Corps while I am in nursing school. Could anyone tell me what it is actually like being a navy nurse? Do you have any say as to what specialty you work in and what are the deployments like? I don't mind deploying, but I would like more information. How similar is it to civilian nursing? Do you work three 12's a week? I have two kids and my husband is currently AD Army. His contract is ending about the time I graduate from NS. He really wants to go to college and I would love to do something that would support us so he would be able to pursue a degree. The military is something I have always wanted to be a part of. Originally, I wanted to join the AF, but they won't take me due to my tattoos. I am hoping the Navy will be a little more lenient.

    Not to burst your bubble, but the Navy is just as strict as the Air Force with regard to tattoos, and the Army has recently changed its tattoo policy as well. I am tattooed from shoulder to wrist (both arms), which was too much for the Air Force and the Navy in 2010. I received a waiver to commission into the Army in 2011, but I would not be allowed to commission into the Army today with my tattoos under the new regs.

    That's what I have been hearing. I spoke with a Navy recruiter who told me I would probably be able to get a waiver. However, I don't know how much truth was in that. Thanks for the reply!

    In todays environment it is hard to get any type of waiver for all services. Others have posted on this site who were attempting to join the Navy and stated that in FY 14 the Navy took zero direct commissions. But if you do not try the answer is no, but they might give you a waiver if you try. What type of recruiter did you speak with; was it the local enlisted recruiter or a healthcare recruiter? If it was the local enlisted recruiter you need to speak with a healthcare recruiter to obtain the information you need since the enlisted ones are not up on what is needed for commissioning.
