I thought we should start a thread for CSULA ELMN summer 2012 applicants since applications are due next month and I'm interested in talking to other people that are applying. Does anyone know how they choose acceptance- is it based on the same point system as their BSN program? Also, does anyone know if they look at cumulative gpa or just the last 60 semester/90 quarter units? There's a few quarters my sophomore year where I slacked off on some classes, but my last 2 years have been much better, so obviously I would prefer that to be weighed more. CSULA seems to focus more on grades than other schools I plan on applying to as there didn't seem to be much room for volunteer experience, certifications, etc. outside of the essay so I'm a little nervous. Anyhoo, I would love to get to know other people who are also applying & any info from people who have already went through this process before would be awesome : )

I applied last year and didn't get in, because they do look at your ENTIRE college career grades. That means every single grade you ever earned is considered for your portfolio. I had some 20 year old grades that eliminated me from the competition and didn't get into any of the Entry Level programs that I applied to. I applied for BSN programs for this Spring, 2012 and have been accepted to two of them, because they only look at last 60 semester/90 quarter units. I don't see what the value is of looking at ancient grades, but that's what entry level programs look at, so I would suggest applying to a few BSN programs as well, so you don't get left in the wind if they deny you admission.

Hello :)
I am planning to apply for CSULA for summer admission but I know it will be hard to get into. By any chance did you find out what the cut off gpa was because I really have NO idea. I thought they only look at your last 60 quarter units? What do you mean all your grades even from community college?

Do you mind telling us what BSN programs that you got accepted to? Some regular BSN programs, such as CSU-LB,do
not allow Degrre-holders to apply for it. Only Acc-BSN programs for Bachelor-holders. Thanks for your kind input.
I called the CSULA nursing department & couldn't get a straight answer on exactly what they look at, just that the entire academic history will be evaluated. But in an older CSULA forum i read that after applying someone contacted the director to check on their application status & was told that it was still pending as they were waiting for the last 90 quarter/60 semester gpa to be calculated so..... idk? I just know that it would be good news for me personally if more weight was given to recent grade performance.
Because of budget cuts most BSN programs within the CSU system are closed to people who already hold a bachelor's degree but maybe you can look at private schools? I know Mt St. Mary's BSN program is open to people seeking a second bachelor's degree but that price (+50K) turned me off.

Hey all,
Thought I would offer my input since I am currently in the program. CSULA does take a look at your cumulative GPA (had to be at least a 3.0). They also want to see a GPA of at least 3.0 in your last 60/90 units. Don't stress too much on GPA- many more factors are considered. Our cohort had a wide range of GPAs. They really do look at the whole person. Some things they look at are your healthcare and non healthcare experiences, and what you can bring to the field of nursing and to the cohort. Try to really sell yourself in that essay : )
Hope this helps a little! If you have any questions let me know. Good luck!

@Sam198: How are you liking the program? Are your clinicals set up for you (in the MSN portion)?
The program is going well, the coordinator for the program and faculty are great. Its a lot of work, but worth it. We have come a long way in just two quarters : ) We have 22 people in our cohort and we are a pretty close-knit group. Our clinical experiences in the first 2 quarters have been good so far.
In the masters part (which we start next Fall) I have heard from other students currently doing their masters that they have to set up their own clinicals. (I only heard from the FNP students, so I am unsure whether the other tracks make you pick your own clinicals). I'll ask the coordinator this week to give you a better answer : )

I am also applying and everywhere else. I have a BA and I'm applying to CC, Private and CSU. I'm hoping I get in somewhere to start on my nursing path.
