CRNA's and Rn's ...

Tell me what kind of nurse you are, what your first day was like and how you got to where you are...

I am exploring career paths and seeking strong experienced advice from my fellow Nurse community!! My end goal is CRNA, I have always been in love with Nursing despite it's nay sayers and negative nancy's , the horror stories and so on. I like to over achieve and challenge myself, Anesthesia is what my father does so since I was a child I have sought after some type of following in his footsteps mingled with my love of Nursing, what better way than to become a CRNA? I have a ways to go yet still I realize but this does not discourage me in the least. Every day is a step closer. Here in Virginia, you must be an RN with a BSN or higher and have at least 1 year of experience in ICU or Trauma to apply to the CRNA program. Any CRNA's that can chime in would be fabulous, as I want to make the right steps for my path to get where I am going! Thank you in advance.

    Where are you in nursing now? If you are looking for an ICU job, that is a good place to start. I work in Surgical ICU and every year a few nurses leave for CRNA school.

    I am just now going into LPN school this August. I am a beginner. I have been a CNA, Phlebotomist and EKG Tech this past 5 years and have recently had the opportunity to go to school full time since my husband finished Engineering and was promoted within his company for it. I will graduate and bridge immediately to RN , I wanted to go straight into RN but here there is a waiting list unless you go through LPN where the nursing director has said she will automatically give priority to LPN's bridging first then choose direct admits with highest scores etc. So it cuts the wait time. I have been told if you make the wrong move in choosing where to start that you can seriously effect the path you are taking and I don't want to make that mistake.

    Good luck in LPN school. CMICU RN here. The ICU is a fantastic place to be if you like to learn. RNs in our unit also respond to Code Blue house-wide, which makes it a good place to be if you are into the adrenaline rush. Many of our nurses go on to some sort of advanced-practice school, either for NP or CRNA. If your end goal is CRNA you have a long road ahead of you no matter what. I'd say don't worry about the time schedule right now and focus on your grades. Especially science courses.
