CRNA specialization

Are there any post-masters programs or fellowships for CRNA's (with Masters degrees) to focus on a sub-specialty like cardiothoracic or pediatric anesthesia?

Thanks for the quick response. Are there other programs out there, as well. I've been searching for days and haven't been able to find anything. Don't know what I want to specialize in yet, but am hoping that I have options.

The reason you cannot find much about fellowships is because they are very new in nurse anesthesia. We are just beginning to develop these in selected sub-specialty areas.

At present, there is no need for any further "specialization" for CRNAs. If you complete school, and become certified, you are qualified and competent to perform any type of anesthesia. In other words, there are no work situations where you are required to have any credential other than CRNA.

Loisane,

Thanks for the information; however, I am a little puzzled and maybe you could shed some light on this for me. After a med student does their anesthesiology residency, they have opportunities for further sub-specialization. What could they possibly be learning that we are not?

Well, not being a physician, I don't know if I am the best qualified to comment on how the profession of medicine works.

Maybe I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking "After I graduate as a CRNA, how do I go about specializing in a particular aspect of anesthesia?". I answered that you do not need a fellowship to do this.

Nurse anesthesia fellowships are being developed for expert status in particular areas. But at this point, there are not many of them, and they are not a requirement for any practice that I am aware of.
