I was recently offered a position as a staff nurse in the state correctional institution. I don't know whether to take this position. I have only nursing home experience. Any ideas? pro/con. :imbar

Nurses that have worked in Nursing Homes or LTC do very in well in Corrections because they are use to functioning automously and with limited resources. I think you would do well.
thanks............

I think that you will do just fine in corrections. The experience actually comes more w/ the job than with the schooling. If you can handle a very diverse group of individuals that are not like any other type of patients, then you can handle it. I don't want to scare you, by any means, but you really have to have a tough skin and be able to take any kind of flack that you can imagine. If you can be a hard, but caring person, then you should love the corrections field. You just cannot wear you heart on your sleeve. Good luck if you decide to go for it.

I have a friend who worked in a prison for 7 years, she said she always told herself on the way to work, these are convicts, and CON is the operative part of the word. They have hours to think of a way to scam staff of every level. Be professional and keep a distance.
I went today for the interview and decided I will not continue the application process. I will stay in LTC.......thanks for your reply.
