Serious question (not being rude here, I promise), but why aren't you asking your potential employer these questions. We can speculate for you, but they're the only ones who can offer more than that.

What you seem to be interested in is a fee for service, where you go to a house, change a foley cath, give meds and assess a decubitus and on to your next assignment.

yes, this is a private duty job. however, i work for a home health agency and i do private duty (peds) nursing. some home health agencies do visit nursing, others do 1 shift per day, which is what you are describing. in answer to your questions:

1. would i be in this lady's house for 12 hrs?

if the shift is for 12 hours, you are expected to be there for 12 hours. it could be an 8 hour, 10, or 12 hour shift.

2. what would i do/how could i keep myself busy?

you would be the only care provider in the home and you would provide full care for the patient, including (but not limited to) bathing, am care, adls. incont. care, gb feedings, and gb meds.

3. is this normal?

i'm confused with this question...is what normal?

4. i thought that hh was going on several visits to different people's homes.

5.could this be private duty?

yes, but it could be considered a home health job...

I did one day in home health with a child (7years old) who had a g-tube and a colostomy and it was the longest 12 hours I had ever spent in my life. If you are a hyper person (I am) than home care may not be for you. I enjoy action and interaction and home care was not it. If I had to go house to house and assess and treat, great, but not being at one house for 12 hours. It would be the perfect job when I decide to slow down, but now is not it.

Not rude I asked you all because I talked to her today, she explained the case and asked me to fax my resume. I thought about it all day at my other job. I couldn't see how I could spend 12 hrs in ONE house. I really didn't understand. MeghanRN did an excellant job of explaining it. Now I understand and am interested. My full time job ends for the summer on May 18 and I need a job.

UPDATE:

I got the job!!! :D I am so EXCITED!! Starting pay $19.00 hr. I will spend 12 hrs in her home and she gets meds about every hr. The sister is into holistic medicine so most of them are vitamins.

She said the work is steady but not hard/busy. I go over the paperwork on May 8th and get my physican then too.
