how competitive are direct-entry programs?

Hi...I applied to a bunch of direct-entry nursing programs, and am most curious about my chances of getting into MGH institute of health professions....My GPA is a 2.9 from Brandeis Univeristy and my GREs are 1240, and I have a lot of health care experience and great references, but i really don't know how good my chances are, because I don't know how competitive this program is...any info anyoen could give me would be greatly appreciated!

That depends on the program. Some programs are more competitive than others. Can you get information from the programs to which you applied? e.g. ... average GRE's, average GPA's of those admittted, what percentage is accepted on the first try, etc.

Sometimes, that info is available on the school's web page, but most often, you will have to ask people in the admitting office -- or some other insider. Sometimes, even a current student at the school can tell you.

But any answer here by someone who doesn't even know what schools you are talking about would be only a wild guess.

I remember when I applied to prgrams in Boston (for the 2003 year), I believe that BC had something like 300 applicants for 30 slots. I do not know about MGH, since I did not apply, but I do know people who are going to Simmons (not as hard to get in here I believe), they have a direct entry masters or you could join the traditional BSN program and be done in 16 to 18 months (I believe it is not as taxing as the accelerated BSN programs). Northeastern also has a program as well. The competition has increased over then past couple of years... a 3.0 is just not cutting it anymore, but you never know. If I were you I would apply to as many programs as I could and have a couple of backup programs. Good Luck!

I am in the same boat as you, I have a 2.95 GPA etc. from my bachelor's. I was told most Direct Entry Master's have an average of 300 apps for only 30-40 slots, with most applicants having a 3.4 average GPA. It is kinda discouraging, but I think the accelerated route may be the way to go, since you will be free to apply to any 2 year master's program when most DEM programs are 3+ years total.
